What Record Labels Quietly Do With Playlists (And How You Can Do It Too)

Here's something most musicians never notice about how record labels work.
Labels promote songs, sure. But the smart ones put just as much money into building playlists.
Here's why that matters for you. A song gets one moment to win someone over. A playlist can bring the same person back every single day.
Howwww? Think about how people listen.
A gym playlist gets played every workout. A sleep playlist gets played every night. A road trip playlist gets played every drive. And a study playlist runs for hours at a time.
The label grows the playlist, puts its own artists inside it, and benefits every time someone presses play.
So instead of promoting one song to one listener, you're promoting one playlist to an audience that comes back for many songs.
Which niches work best
The best niches have three things in common. People come back often, they listen for long stretches, and they don't need new music every week to keep playing it.
Think study beats, sleep sounds, deep focus, gym motivation, road trip songs or coding music.
The part most musicians miss
A playlist with 10,000 followers who listen every week can be worth more than a song with 100,000 streams that people forget a month later.
And it can pay you in two ways. You earn royalties from your own music on the playlist, and you get paid by other musicians who submit their songs to you for feedback.
So you get one asset with two income streams, running quietly in the background. Pretty sweet.
How to start building one
- Pick a niche people come back to, like study beats, sleep sounds or gym motivation.
- Build the playlist around that one use, and add your own music next to songs that fit.
- Grow it with a few dollars a day in Instagram ads.
- Keep it updated, so followers turn into repeat listeners and every new follower becomes a listener for your next release.
One honest note: this works best if you already have a few songs out and you're willing to play the long game. The goal is to build something that creates value far beyond streams.
I teach the whole system step by step, with screen shares, in Label Level Playlists. And if you'd rather have it done for you, I also build and grow the playlist for you.
