How I'd Grow My Social Media From 0 as a Musician in 2026

By Finch Bergling · Dec 16, 2025 · 📱 Content & Social

If I had to start social media from 0 in 2026, here's what I'd do.

A lot of people are talking about AI taking over music. But here's the thing: the more AI floods the market, the more people want to connect with humans.

That's your advantage. But you need two things to make it work:

1. A clear brand. Who are you, and what makes you different? (If you can't answer that in one sentence, neither can your audience.)

2. Consistency. You need to show up, even when it isn't perfect yet.

The Platform Question

Short-form video is still king. But which platform should you pick?

TikTok: it's easier to blow up there. Your first video could hit 10M views.

Instagram: it's harder to grow, but better for building deeper relationships.

My advice? Use both. Use TikTok for discovery and Instagram for depth. If you don't have time, post the same content on both.

Growing on Instagram

I hadn't started from 0 since 2022. Recently, I created a new account for my friends' social club, to help them promote it and to see how brutal it is now.

It's brutal.

But here's what worked: I followed 50 accounts in my niche every day, and about 20 of them followed back. That's 20+ new followers a day, but more importantly, the algorithm learned who I was.

By day 7, my Reels started reaching new people, and I started getting the notification "___ started following you from your Reel."

I used the same strategy on my main account in the early days. Once I hit 1,000 followers, I stopped the follow strategy and let the content do the work.

Instagram action plan:

  • Follow 30-50 accounts in your niche every day
  • Engage with them properly (comments, DMs, replies to stories)
  • Post at least 3-4 Reels a week
  • Make sure you have a clear bio, 3 pinned posts, and a highlight

Growing on TikTok

I challenged myself to hit 5,000 followers from 0. It took me 20 days in total, and I reached 1,000 in just 3 days.

Here's exactly what worked:

Days 1-3: I posted 3 videos a day, each with a different hook. One of them hit 300K views, and it was a simple reaction video to local music.

The formula:

  • Respond to comments with videos
  • Make it about THEM, not you ("What song should I cover next?")
  • Use your location to your advantage (local content gets pushed locally first)

Days 4-20: I doubled down on what worked. I kept the format and changed the songs, because engagement brings more engagement.

TikTok action plan:

  • Post at least 1-2 times a day
  • Test 3 different hooks for the same content
  • Respond to every comment in the first hour

The Bottom Line

Growing from 0 sucks. Your first videos won't get much exposure, and you'll start questioning everything.

But here's what I know after working with more than 300 musicians: the ones who make it are the ones who didn't quit after 100 videos.

Some of the musicians you admire once posted to crickets too. They kept going.

Pick one platform to focus on this week, and post every day for 7 days.

After those 7 days, you'll have learned more than you would from reading 100 articles about growth.

If you want a plan to follow, The 100K Challenge is free and gives you one short chapter and one action a day for 10 days. And if you run out of things to post, The Content Vault has 308 content ideas with examples.

Growing from zero is hard, but you need to do it if you want your music heard.
