Cheap Streams Syndrome: Why Guaranteed Streams Never Turn Into Fans
By Finch Bergling · Sep 6, 2025 · 🎧 Spotify & Playlists
I need to tell you something that might sting a little.
You probably chase streams and numbers, because that's something you can brag about to your friends and family.
But that nice DM from a fan? You keep it hidden in a drawer, like it's worth nothing. NOTHING.
This is what I call cheap streams syndrome, and it keeps musicians broke and frustrated.
What's going on behind guaranteed placements
Most playlist curators get hundreds of songs every month, and they can only add around 100 songs or less to their playlists. They have to be selective.
If a playlist guarantees you a placement, it's doing one of these things:
- Using bots to inflate its numbers.
- Adding every song it gets, which ruins the playlist's quality.
- Mixing genres randomly, which hurts your push from the algorithm.
If you're not sure about a playlist you're already on, I wrote about what to do when your song gets added to a fake Spotify playlist.
And the guaranteed-stream ad campaigns?
Those are even fishier.
Nobody can tell you the exact results of an ad campaign before it starts. They can give you an estimate, but never a specific number, and especially not a big one.
When I run ads for a song, the numbers I give up front are estimates from my past campaigns, and you can see those campaigns with their numbers on my case studies page.
Here's why this matters. Cheap streams bring cheap listeners, and cheap listeners never become fans.
I spend hours every week picking the right songs for my playlists. I've told dozens of musicians I won't run ads for their music because it's simply not good enough yet.
Anyone willing to help you without a second thought doesn't care about you. And when you pay them anyway, you feed a system that keeps trapping other musicians.
Monthly listeners don't tell the whole story
I know musicians with 1,000 monthly listeners who play shows regularly, get interviewed all the time and land editorial playlists. (Check out Salares if you like Spanish indie music. She's amazing!)
At the same time, I see musicians with 25K monthly listeners who get 100 views on an average reel and zero recognition.
What's the difference? One group built fans who care. The other bought fake engagement.
What to focus on instead
- Honest feedback over fake streams. That DM from someone saying your song helped them through a tough time is worth more than 10,000 bot streams.
- Quality over quantity. One song that connects with 100 people who care beats a song that gets ignored by 10,000 playlist bots.
- Long-term growth over quick fixes. Building 50 true fans in the next six months beats buying 5,000 fake streams that disappear next week.
Bottom line: a lot of people want to take your money and run. Don't let them.
Aim for the long term. Aim for fans who care about your music and your story. Aim for more than just streams.
Those are the people who'll come to your shows, buy your merch and stick around for years. The bots from that $50 "guaranteed placement" never will.
If you want a curator who listens to every song, you can send yours through my Song Submission. I tell you honestly what I think, and I only add it if it fits.
